Join the Louisville Esoteric Society on Tuesday February 25, 2014 at 6:30 PM for our next meeting:   “Immortal Beings on an Evolutionary Pathway, a Spiritist View“ presented by Sheila Van Leyen.

Spiritism is, at once, a science, a philosophy, and a religion.  The teachings, concepts, and principles of all three are interdependently woven into this doctrine of consolation, clarification, and inspiration.

The science of Spiritism studies the existence and nature of spirits, which are nothing more than the immortal souls of men, created by God.

The philosophy, which was derived from a serious study of information received in communications with discarnate spirits, deals with the details of spirit life and the journey of evolution through the process of reincarnation. A natural consequence of that philosophy is the understanding of the role we play in our own spiritual evolution, which is ultimately achieved through the efforts we make to grow, both morally and intellectually.

The religious aspect stems from the moral ties between ourselves, and others, and the direction that Spiritism leads us, toward God, our creator, by helping us to understand life and by teaching us, ultimately, how to develop the ability to love, in the greatest sense of the word.

Spiritism helps us to understand the natural laws that govern that process of evolution. From a moral perspective, we follow the teachings and examples of Jesus Christ, as our model and guide.

In the first part of the talk Sheila will define some fundamentals of Spiritism such as: God, Matter, Spirit, and Life’s purpose.  In the second part we’ll watch an explanatory video on the physiological aspects of mediumship.

This feature documentary, which gained three prestigious Angel Awards at the Monaco International Film Festival in 2008, takes you on a cinematographic journey to João Teixeira de Faria, also known as John of God, the miracle healer of Brazil. The film explores the extraordinary abilities of this internationally respected medium and shows João’s incorporation by one of the many spirit beings who work through him to heal sick and disabled people from all over the world.

Over one million people have visited the Casa de Dom Inácio centre in the village of Abadiânia, Brazil. Since João first discovered this miraculous faculty more than 50 years ago, an enormous number of individuals, many with illnesses considered incurable, have received healing that mainstream medical opinion cannot explain.

In the latter half of 2013 I walked almost 1,900 miles from Maine to North Carolina on the Appalachian Trail (AT).  I lived in the wilderness and walked all day, almost every day for five months.   My motivation to hike the AT included my desire to raise awareness of the fastest spreading infectious disease in the United States, if not the world.  My one most consistent and meaningful experience on the trail reinforced this knowing: by nature, the vast majority of people are kind, generous, compassionate and empathetic.  Yet contrasted against that recurring theme, this quote by John Lennon kept coming to my mind:

Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it’ – John Lennon

Over the previous two years, Lyme disease had knocked me to the ground…literally and figuratively.  In the years prior to my illness I had become well aware of what some now refer to as “The Matrix”, an interlocking system of mechanisms and structures of social control and manipulation.  But my personal experience with all the various aspects of this engineered epidemic called Lyme disease brought me face to face with what I believe John Lennon was trying to point out.

I left for the trail with the hope that I would find some insight, some greater meaning and purpose to my personal journey within the world I inhabit.  All my life I have yearned for answers to those grand eternal questions about life.   Given my personal experience of true human nature, one of my questions is this: Why is that nature not reflected in our greater shared societal reality?  During this talk I will do my best to illustrate both what I mean by “The Matrix”, and what answers, insights and gifts came to me during my journey.  I highly recommend watching the free internet documentary Thrive either before, or soon after my presentation.  It will help add scope, context and additional insights and research resources to my presentation.

He was a 17th century Einstein, who reduced nature’s chaos to a single set of laws and revolutionized the thinking and outlook of his age. Dr. Newton holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, is a certified Master Hypnotherapist and is a member of the American Counseling Association. He has been on the faculty of higher educational institutions as a teacher and counselor while also active in private practice. In addition, Dr. Newton has been a corporate consultant and worked as a behavioral counselor and group therapy director for community mental health centers with hospital and social service agencies. He has been a hypnotherapist for over 50 years and a LBL therapist for over 40 years. He is considered a pioneer in uncovering the mysteries about life after death through the use of Spiritual Regression.

Dr. Newton is the author of three best selling books, Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives (1994), Destiny of Souls: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives (2000) and Life Between Lives Hypnotherapy (2004) published by Llewellyn. These books have been translated into over 25 languages. In 2001 his second book was awarded “Metaphysical Book of the Year” by the independent publishers association at their annual Book Exposition of America meeting. He is also the editor of the latest release Memories of the Afterlife (2009), which includes intriguing case studies written by members of TNI’s growing global network of Life Between Lives Therapists.

In this interview with Dr. Michael Newton from 1996, Dr. Newton tells how his LBL career began and shares his knowledge, experience, insights and stories about our immortal Life Between Lives. The presentation will include a little history of the organization and its founder – Ernest Holmes. It will include information on how the organization is structured and what the local center, Louisville Center for Spiritual Living,  is doing to fulfill the organization’s mission. The presentation will allow time for questions and discussion.

Some of the ideas we’ll discuss will include: Change your thinking, change your life; We are all One; Through teaching and practice we change individual lives and the world; Life is meant to be good; Our understanding of a Power Greater than we are determines how we live our lives.
