Changes to Louisville Esoteric Society

Uncategorized No Comments »

500x390-flammarionLouisville Esoteric Society has lost our lease in Bakery Square due to a business expansion next door overtaking our space.  After a fruitful six years of thought-provoking presentations we’ve decided it’s time for LES to evolve. For the time being we will discontinue our regular twice-a-month public meetings, but may re-start public meetings at some point in the future. If we do, we’ll post a notice here, so you will be aware of our plans.

It’s been a wonderful six-year run.  Thanks to all those who chose to financially and spiritually support our intent to have a private and inspirational location for our gatherings.  Thanks to all those who have taken the initiative to present great topics to our group over the years.  The relationships we’ve formed are invaluable.  It’s you who’ve made the difference!

April 27, 2016 – Otherworld: Places of Initiation and Living Resurrection

Metaphysics, Mysticism, Spirituality No Comments »

DVDcase_wrap.qxdJoin us Wednesday April 27, 2016 at 6:30 PM for “Otherworld: Places of Initiation and Living Resurrection” presented by John Pickard.

What if the concept of resurrection perpetuated by the Church is a fraud? That it was once a level of initiation performed in secret Mysteries schools around the world, thousands of years before Christ?

That a suppressed gospel describes it as something to be experienced by the living, not the dead? That it involves an out-of-body journey to the Otherworld and back? That prominent scholars and initiates like Socrates and Plato described it as the pinnacle of a person’s spiritual development? And that the places where this life-changing adventure is possible are all around us?

This short film by best-selling author and researcher Freddy Silva may turn you inside out.

All sincere seekers are welcome.  $10 for pay-as-you-go attendees; No charge for LES pre-pay Members.

March 23, 2016 – ‘Experiencers’ with John E Mack

Experiencers - Alien Abduction Research J MackJoin us Wednesday March 23, 2016 at 6:30 PM for “Experiencers with John E Mack” presented by John Pickard.

A documentary by Stephane Allix about Alien Abductions features several experiencers who had worked with Dr. John E. Mack Harvard Psychologist who appears only briefly in this film, his death having occurred soon after production began.

More substantial are visits to the New England countryside with experiencers, including one couple who videotaped an unidentified flying object hovering above a lake a few hours before they were abducted from their lakeside cottage. Also in this film, is the New York artist and alien encounter investigator Budd Hopkins.

Although this documentary is similar to other documentaries commonly seen on American cable television, it has a more leisurely pace and gives more time for the experiencers to explain themselves than is commonly granted in US productions. One of the best interviews in the program is not with an experiencer at all, but rather with the husband of an experiencer, who matter-of-factly explains how his family has come to terms with his wife’s experiences.

John Edward Mack M.D. (October 4, 1929 — September 27, 2004) was an American psychiatrist, writer, and professor at Harvard Medical School. He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, and a leading authority on the spiritual or transformational effects of alleged alien abduction experiences.

Mack had a world view inspired by elements of spiritual and philosophical traditions which hold that people are all connected to one another; this theme of “connection” was taken to a controversial extreme in the early 1990s when Mack commenced his decade-plus study of 200 men and women who reported recurrent alien encounter experiences. Such encounters had seen some limited attention from academic figures (R. Leo Sprinkle perhaps being the earliest, in the 1960s). Mack, however, remains probably the most esteemed academic to have studied the subject

February 10, 2016 – The Floor Is Yours!

Celebration No Comments »

5-year-anniversary-e1446836205434The Floor is YOURS!

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of LES in February 2016 we’re doing something entirely different! We’re asking each attendee to think about what they would like 2016 to mean in their lives. What would you like to accomplish over the next year – whether materially, spiritually or otherwise.

We would like to have a discussion centered around all our hopes and dreams for the next year. It can be anything that’s currently on your mind…your goals, your hobbies, your job, your family, your spirituality…anything at all. It can be something as simple as I want the summer to be a moderate temperature and as complex as I want to find a cure for a disease, or the meaning of life.

This meeting is all about you. So, please come prepared to share with everyone some of what’s important to you. If you don’t want to share, that’s fine…just come and listen to those that do.

We’ll celebrate our 5th anniversary with some cake and champagne (the cheap kind)! We’ll also have an aspiration ball, where you can write something that you would like to see happen in 2016 and insert it into the ball. No one will be able to read what you write if you don’t want them to. Once it’s in the ball, it’s in there. But we’ll have a few minutes for everyone to focus on sending their energy for success on the aspirations placed inside the ball.

Hope you’ll join us for this unique group experience.

All sincere seekers are welcome.  $10 for pay-as-you-go attendees; No charge for LES pre-pay Members.

March 25, 2015 – CITIZENFOUR

Join us Wednesday March 25, 2015 at 6:30 PM for “CITIZENFOUR.

CITIZENFOUR is a real life thriller, unfolding by the minute, giving audiences unprecedented access to filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald’s encounters with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong, as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA).

Poitras had already been working on a film about surveillance for two years when Snowden contacted her, using the name “CITIZENFOUR,” in January 2013.  He reached out to her because he knew she had long been a target of government surveillance, stopped at airports numerous times, and had refused to be intimidated. When Snowden revealed he was a high-level analyst driven to expose the massive surveillance of Americans by the NSA, Poitras persuaded him to let her film.

CITIZENFOUR places you in the room with Poitras, Greenwald, and Snowden as they attempt to manage the media storm raging outside, forced to make quick decisions that will impact their lives and all of those around them.

CITIZENFOUR not only shows you the dangers of governmental surveillance—it makes you feel them. After seeing the film, you will never think the same way about your phone, email, credit card, web browser, or profile, ever again.

All sincere seekers are welcome – there will be no charge for attendees.

Special Interest Group (SIG) – Wednesday October 1, 2014: COSMOS & Camaraderie

Cosmology, Science 2 Comments »

Wednesday, October 1, @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

 Hubble image of Eta Carinae

NOTE: This group does NOT replace our regularly scheduled 2nd and 4th Wednesday presentation meetings. For more information on SIGs, please check out the SIG link.

This SIG is FREE for all Pre-Paid LES Members! Others are invited to attend for $5 per meeting to help cover the cost of food and drink. All are welcome! (On the menu: Pizza!)

In our fourth COSMOS SIG meeting we’ll learn how astrophysicists determine the make up, the age and the eventual fate of  the stars we see in our night sky. You may be surprised when you learn who developed the method for doing so and how the method at first flew in the face of conventional scientific evidence. But, science must eventually accept carefully gathered evidence, and as the author of what is regarded the the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written written in astronomy wrote, “If you are sure of your facts, you should defend your position.” We’ll hear several legends about the Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters. We’ll also hear about the Carina Nebula and Eta Carinae which may go hypernova in our lifetimes!! The Universe wastes nothing – stars to dust and dust to stars – the ultimate reincarnation!!

In the second episode we’ll learn about the life of another genius who transformed our world, a child born into poverty with a speech impediment. After being treated cruelly by a teacher as a small boy because of this impediment,  he never returned to school. But genius combined with hard work and passion can overcome poverty and cruelty as it did in Michael Faraday’s life. His life, work and discoveries started a revolution and changed the course of all our lives. Faraday did something else. He made science accessible to those of us, young and old, who don’t possess his genius. His tradition of doing so has continued since. This episode also points to the importance of partnerships in life and especially in accomplishing major breakthroughs. John Donne wrote, “…No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…”  The best partnerships are the ones where the weaknesses of one are bolstered by the strengths of the other. Such was the partnership between Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell.

Because each episode stands on its own with different subject matter, it’s not necessary to see all the episodes to follow the series. But, each episode is packed with information and all episodes are beautifully done and entertaining, so attend all if you can.

Note:  The final three COSMOS SIG meetings will take place on Wed., October 1; Wed., October 15; and Wed., October 29 from 6:00 – 8:30 PM.

We’ll have a greeter at the front door till 6:05. After that, late entrants may call the phone number posted on the door for admittance. Hope to see you there!!

For additional information about the COSMOS SIG, please refer to the the August 5th post announcing the SIG.
